...and there goes the EvilChildCatcher.
About a decade ago, we travelled through a lot of Catholic countries. Sightseeing, of course, takes you into a lot of churches and cathedrals.
EVERYWHERE we went, there were lots of big photos of smileyJP, half a decade gone, and far fewer and smaller ones of the scowly incumbent.

Former Pope Benedict XVI dies at 95I must say that nothing will trouble be less than the death of the head the Catholic church (or the head of the Russian orthodox or the Supreme Leader of Iran or or). At least this time we won't have to go through the nonsense of watching for white/black smoke from some b****y chimney as a bunch of people commit the Cardinal sin of continuing the abhorrence that is the Catholic church by electing a new pontiff. Apologies to any Catholics on here. This is not targeted at individual believers (albeit I am an atheist).

Who in their right mind believes in miracles prior to canonisation? As for the various popes, pope John Paul II was the most popular of recent times, but I would have said the two most notable things about his time in charge were:
- Overseeing widespread sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests, and
- Actively discouraging people in Sub-Saharan Africa from practising safe sex (resulting in millions of then becoming HIV positive).

I believe the usual retort revolves around disgruntled employee Satan and his acolytes sabotaging the entire company except for the only truly profitable sales department, which is, of course, <insert own religion of choice>.

This, absolutely this. It was during the Aids epidemic that I truly moved from being a committed atheist but neutral about 'the church', to one where I took the view that the Catholic church was a force for evil (in its aetheistic meaning rather than religious). Hard on the heels of that, I came to realise that its doctrine on contraception was, even net of Aids, condemning huge swathes of its followers to increased poverty, and particularly condemned young women to lives with little opportunity for education or betterment in general. Since then I've only ever had cause to reinforce that view.

I remain uncertain about God or gods I remain completely certain about religion, I'm agin' it.
luckily my life experiences have not tested me on this but I do remember watching -for-brains teachers being hired in my school because they were vicars/devout christian after the benign atheist Headmaster left and was replaced by a bonkers Christian one. I spent my final year trying to get the man removed, happening finally a couple of years after I left. How hard was it to see that religion was just a cover for basic incompetence?

Tom Karen
A prolific designer who had a hand in designing a host of 1970s creations including the Raleigh Chopper bicycle and Bond Bug car (a high spec 3 wheel van that would put the Reliant Robin to shame)

A mate of mine worked for Ogle for a few years, and always spoke VERY highly of Karen. Not just a massively influential designer, but a truly nice bloke.
