Jeff Beck, one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time, has died at the age of 78.
The British musician rose to fame as part of the Yardbirds, where he replaced Eric Clapton, before forming the Jeff Beck group with Rod Stewart.

RIP Raquel Welch died aged 82
The thing I always remember about her is that her son Damon was married to cricket legend Fred Trueman's daughter Rebecca. Can't imagine two more different families (I appreciate that other people may remember her for other things)

I always thought one of the greatest gifts you can have is the ability not to worry about things you have no control over. I went to see my doctor several years ago with what turned out to be a fairly minor ailment. We got talking about getting older and mortality and he pointed out that my two biggest risk factors were being male and in my 50's.
I have a friend in his 50's who had a heart attack while walking home from work several weeks ago. They took him to Exeter hospital and diagnosed that he needed a triple heart bypass, which he would need to go to Plymouth for. He remained in Exeter and was told he would be moved tp Plymouth in 2 days time for the op. Unfortunatey, an outbreak of norovirus hit the ward he was in and Plymouth wouldn't take him. Exeter fitted a stent in the worst affected artery and sent him home, on the basis that the 2 other affected arteries were only 85% furred up (which apparently isn't as bad as it sounds). The stent is going to stay and he is waiting for a date from Plymouth to have the double heart bypass. 10 days after being told he couldn't go to Plymouth he's sat at the bar next to me recounting his near death experience.

Wasn't she the lady on the poster on the wall of whatsisname's cell in The Shawshank Redemption, concealing the hole he'd been making? I seem to remember her furry bikini, she looked most fetching in it, maybe that's why it's stayed in my mind. Good old Raquel, they don't make them like her anymore. And Gina Lollabrigida, also recently deceased. Proper movie stars, with glamour and a broad appeal to both men and women.

I saw Raquel Welch in Woman of the Year on Broadway, I recall sensing the communal intake of breath from the New York theatregoers around me when she first appeared on the stage.
