He drives from Cambletown to Tarbert then ferry to Portavadie then drives to Tighnabruaich, ( every day provided the ferrying running ) then back in the evening. He must be the luckiest EVRI driver in the country. Or unlucky depending how you look at it. These s/e couriers get paid by the drop, remote areas mean dead miles and burnt fuel with no revenue gained. Unless he us working with multiple courier companies or negotiating a highlands rate he wont make much. Btw, rates are worse for deliveries than 30 years ago in real terms. Lovely area though, bet diesel us around 1.75?

He always has a smile on his face and loves a chat. We have a second driver who comes on a different route from Dunoon, he has to change his route because one of the bridges collapsed on his normal route, he told me yesterday that he enjoys the drive especially this time of year with the changing colours and at one point he always stops to admire the view. Lifestyle choices I guess.

I can't see him being paid the same way as in most of the UK. I'm sure its worked out so that the delivery guy can feed his family on the money he receives.
Presumably EVRI and certainly the RM swallow the financial hit in order to provide a less patchy service.
I've no idea but I'm assuming that postcode doesn't normally come under "highlands and islands" which private couriers will either exclude or charge more for. Its not in the highlands and its definitely not an island so who knows ?

They're self-employed, so minimum wage legislation doesn't apply. There seems to be different scales, and the per-package probably is higher on the long-distance routes. But, obvs, so are the driver's expenses, while the number of parcels delivered does the exact opposite. Having said that, we had a package coming via one courier - I forget which - that had real-time tracking of the van. Given how far out in the boonies we are, and how low population density, I was very surprised that at least his last 15-20 parcels were all basically within about a 5 mile radius of here. Don't underestimate just how many people get stuff delivered out here in ruralshire - because it's a damn sight easier than the alternative.

I sold a workshop manual on ebay to a seller on Iom... cost me an additional 6 quid due to being offshore! I guess with even surcharges it's still cheaper than driving to nearest big town.

Even locally it can be cheaper / more economic to have stuff delivered
for example there's a reasonable sized town 10 miles drive away, and a couple of Ebay sellers I use
10 miles each way say 2 litres of fuel that's £3 so If I'm going that way I might collect if possible, otherwise I have stuff delivered

EVRI is not always the cheapest. FedEx could be £4 cheaper than Evri for larger items.

Snail mail keeps letting me down recently. The 48 hours service is getting worse, either less tracking and moving slower compared than years ago. Meanwhile, participating Post Offices offer DPD / Evri from counters. It feels weird dropping an Evri parcel at the sub postoffoce like a snail mail parcel these days. At least I got a smile at the drop off point, what a change!

12:27 Email drops into my mailbox
We will deliver your parcel today between 9:30 and 11:30
12:28 Email to say parcel delivered at 10:12
so the out for delivery email arrives 3 hours after the earliest time and over 2 hours after I was given it.

Yodel delivery. Bang on time, the very start of the two-hour time window quoted this morning, to the minute...
Shame he carried the parcel from the van to the house with the full circumference of "THIS WAY UP" tape pointing firmly at the floor, then handed it to me diagonally.

Shame he carried the parcel from the van to the house with the full circumference of "THIS WAY UP" tape pointing firmly at the floor, then handed it to me diagonally. Yodel delivery marked on van at 8:35 - just after 9 I saw 24 drops before me 12:30 still showing 24 drops, so I jump on live chat as I've seen on the tracking the van south of me then north of me. So I ask the question is there an issue with the system because number of drops hasn't changed in over 3 hours. get a "let me look" answer 5 minutes later, "we've loaded 2 rounds into 1 van you are the second round, so the number won't change until the driver starts the second round, we are expecting between 3 and 9 this evening." how useless are they

Like all tracking, it's not very good.... except dpd. Bang on time everytime. Evri and yodel service depends on driver, some good some bad. Generally you get what you pay for . Most are lifestyle couriers getting paid under 50p a drop. Hardly a motivator.
