Having sold most of my sellable items as part of my recent decluttering process I've not done much on ebay recently. As a buyer who has admittedly bought some questionable quality items from China, I find it amusing to be offered 10% off when items are so poorly made they dont fit their purpose. These tend to be items cast instead of machined, like bike levers etc, simply poor quality. Thankfully chinese stuff has now become too expensive to take a gamble on so I dont buy it. Now with new Hmrc rules, I wonder how this will affect ebay sales volumes in coming years.

There seems to be a lot of traders who are panicking because they have never registered with HMRC. And there are a lot of non-traders who have misunderstood the recent announcement and think they are going to have to pay tax on their old tat. I think people doing Air BnB who aren't registered with HMRC are taking the Mick.

I think people doing Air BnB who aren't registered with HMRC are taking the Mick. I know people who hopefully will get caught by this, Buy ( or in 1 case I know beg ) bundles of clothes on FB marketplace freecycle etc and sell individual items on ebay etc. One girl I know says she's found a loophole and will wear each item she buys (even if for 5 minutes) then it is her own preworn clothing she is selling and thus she thinks exempt from the tax rules. Now I could argue on the same grounds that I use all the camera lenses I sell to take photos ( I do this to prove they work OK ). As I see it, if you buy to resell you are trading, if you are trading then you should pay tax on the profit.

🤣 At least the woman will do different poses for each garment, then list the pics online as proof with her unique personal features. Very unique.

The app asks me to leave feedback for items I bought in the last x days. Well, I don’t need a reminder for that. Those supposed to have good feedbacks, I have already done so.

not ebay, but seems the most appropriate thread....
I am selling something via FB. I also have it listed on ebay but will cancel the auction shortly* if I receive the money.
The buyer has suggested using paypal. Presumably because they want to get buyer protection. Do paypal charge any fee for this, specifically do they charge me, the seller, for it ?

Do paypal charge any fee for this, specifically do they charge me, the seller, for it ? Possibly. See the notes section: How do I send money?Looks like it hinges on whether you have (or sign up for) a Personal or a Business account and/or whether the buyers elects the 'item / service' or 'paying a friend' option.

iRobot thanks. Good to know. That's a shame: I couldn't find the seller's charge when I first looked for it but now I'm finding its 2.9%. I've just waived a small portion of the postage fee to round down the total price. I probably wouldn't have done so if I knew the fee (which looks like it is 2.9%). I had it listed on ebay, and I'm hoping the fee for cancellation won't be anything significant. There are currently no bids on it, but I put a reserve on the auction listing so suspect I'll get hit with the reserve listing fee. EDIT: I'm only on PP as a personal rather than business account, so its possible the buyer won't be able to use the goods/services option. We'll see. EDIT2: Well even as I hit return, she has sent me money, and its slightly more than the goods + postage, which is nice of her as a response to my offerring to round it down. But it is a round number, so looks like I've not been charged.

I'm back on my decluttering mission hence some more stuff recently listed. It's seems ebay greed has reached new levels as I'm getting no views or offers etc unless I constantly reduce the price or use ebay promotional features adding more costs.

mogish, I am decluttering as well. It’s true eBay has updated the algorithm but I have 0 views for the first 72 hours on my listings. But I managed to sell my stuffs without reducing prices. There are things I didn’t bother to list there because I know there’s much demand for those items at a good price

It's seems ebay greed has reached new levels as I'm getting no views or offers etc unless I constantly reduce the price or use ebay promotional features adding more costs. one thing eBay don't publicise, but they told us at a seller seminar they downgrade all your items in search results if even 1 of your items has less than 5 pictures and for me things like filters for camera lenses 5 photos per item is a joke. I end up doing looking down, sideways to show the make etc, another from the back to show the thread one of it in the case (if in a case ) and the case. if I don't have the case I often duplicate the pictures just to satisfy the algorithm. they guy on the seminar that kicked off most was a seller of snooker balls as he said how can I take 5 different photos of a red snooker ball

Not sure it’s necessary to have 5 photos to boost viewership, but plenty of “hot” sellers list stuffs with just couple of pics that “viewers” love to click. The algorithm loves those like promoting instagramesque pics.
I sold 2 textbooks recently with just one pic per listing.

Has anyone used the AI feature to aid description?
I tried it once and thought it was too flashy for some lower priced stuff like books etc. I believe its better to be honest about stuff rather than end up in a disagreement. Clever feature but poss only appropriate in certain circumstances.

I tried it, not recommended for selling pre-owned /pre-loved items. The AI generated descriptions are not for my used items.
