Something very strange going on with GoCompare who I've used for a long time.
My usual insurance trifecta is Hastings, Policy Expert, Rias/Ageas but for some reason Hastings wants £424 instead of £152 last year and the other two couldn't provide a quote. Nothing has changed since last year except my car and I being a year older. Must be age discrimination.
Haven't even had a claim for over a decade since I reversed into a lamppost in front my widened drive the first day I moved into the house. I thought what happened there.

There's been a fair amount of chatter on social media and in mainstream news over the past few months. My experience at renewal was similar to yours. I recall spending a long time messing around with comparison sites and occasionally going direct. Eventually I got a figure somewhere between the renewal price and what I was paying last year.

Insurance in general has rocketed this year. Our house insurance went up to over £400. No claims no change. Tried comparison sites to be quoted over £1500. Aviva gave no reason just said take it ir leave it. Same with our motorhome, ended up on a forum which recommended a broker where I got cover for approx same as last year. Like supermarkets, you have to put in lots if legwork to get an acceptable cost. Maybe claims in your area have increased or you car is higher risk?

Same everywhere.
Our decade-old Nissan w*nk*rt*nk*r is up for renewal soon. First look showed last year's insurer (£250ish) aren't even quoting, everybody else is well north of £500. (edit: Meerkat best is £870!)
Car insurance has rocketed. Huge losses over the last few years, thanks in large part to post-Covid parts delays and the knock-on increase in hire car costs. It's always been a very competitive market, so low margin. They're trying to claw back those losses and future-proof a bit, because the other choice is getting out of the market completely.

I'm with Hastings and have just renewed my policy. Last year I paid £263 and their original renewal this year was for £358. I did a comparison on Money supermarket and the best like for like was £308 from "Quote me Happy". I rung Hastings and they agreed to reduce their quote to £300 which I accepted. I'm a bit peed off that they didn't offer this in the first place, but what can you do? I drive a Jaguar XKR.

I think you were lucky. I recently sold my car that had an annual insurance premium of £224. The insurance company refused to transfer the policy to my replacement. Instead they quoted nearly £900 for a new annual policy. I turned down their handsome offer and the balance of the premium less a £25 "Administration" fee was returned - a bit rich considering it was they who had refused to transfer the policy. I shopped around and did with difficulty find another insurer who quoted £400. these are/were run of the mill modest older cars. So yes insurance premiums have rocketed with brokers adamant that the world of car insurance premiums has changed fundamentally.

You can get £40 cashback from one of the comparison sites, but the days of getting £80-100 cashback are over. This year I had to pay almost £80 after cashback. It pays to shop around- try all the comparison sites. It's a bit of a bind having to enter all your details but you can get them to save your details for next year.

Nationwide have just quoted me £211 House and contents, new for old that's £50 down.
I expect car insurance will go up, the next street had 16 cars get windscreens smashed one night by a drunken yob, and several cars on my street recently got damaged by a speeding driver

Rias renewal was £222. The cheapest gocompare quote was £255. I normally use quidco(£30 cashback)->gocompare>insurer but not this year.
rias and ageas are the same company.

Sometimes the tracking isn't perfect. We went via topcashback to comparethemarket.com to Sky Protect in June. Ended up with £30 cashback from comparethemarket.com and £20 from Sky Protect for the single purchase in our topcashback account, so £50 in total.

I wonder how many insurance companies there really are? I say that because I know dozens of them use the same underwriter and some are just brand names of others. If there are just a handful of underwriters, could it mean if one changes policy then that has a huge affect on the market as a whole?
