There's a Savings Session tonight 1730 to 1830. I didn't receive a notification for it. You have to opt in on the app/website. Just to clarify this is where you get paid for using less energy. It is not a cheap energy session. I am new to this, do you have to switch off the Mains circuit breaker in order to get savings? or just by using less? You have to wait until either neighbour goes out and run a cable from their meter to yours.

Other approaches are available. I've registered, but the truth is we've always struggled to get any meaningful savings as the 'peak demand' times don't necessarily conincide with times we actually pose abnormally high demand.

I think the actual deal is they have to have at least 15 days worth of readings (half hourly) that they have received 80% of the time. What could possibly go wrong? And yes being with Octopus is a good start.

And yes being with Octopus is a good start. Spot on.... and quite unlike last year's scheme. Last year, I only needed to opt in, nothing else. We made the odd few pence from these reduced usage slots. A total of about £2 for the whole season (although we didn't put any effort in, to be fair). £2 off a £2,000+ annual bill. So, nothing to lose, I opted in to this year's scheme and thought I'd done everything required. We received the email today notifying this evening's slot and, like a man who'd won the Lotto, I exclaimed to SWMBO, "This is great news - we are currently away from home, so at last we might make a few bob worth having!". The email asked me to "click here" to ensure I'm participating in this evening's slot.... whereupon it informed me that there were even more hoops to jump through. 🙄 Apparently I was no longer eligible, despite opting in, but instead faced another long list of demands. Skim reading, it seems I need to download an app, ensure notifications are set on, approve a half-hourly smart meter reading, etc, etc, accept this, click here, read the t&cs, wait for an R in the month.... and then wait 15 days to accumulate the data you mention above. Despite my smart meter has been running uninterrupted for weeks. Honestly, I can no longer be bothered. For a couple of quid a year, sorry Octopus, life's too short for your silly games.... and for that reason, I'M OUT!

Apparently there were problems with the registration process for this event, with people being told they were not eligible when they were. I think the website and app were overwhelmed. Anyway, there may be more short notice events but you will only be told about them via the Octopus WhatsApp channel. Unfortunately, 'channels' aren't available to everyone on WhatsApp yet

Thinking I may have missed something (purely from academic interest I hasten to add) I've logged in and it shows that I was part of the session (still in 'calculating' mode as far as to what energy was saved). That said, I probably already signed up for 'Octoplus' some time back when prompted. So one theory is that once you have done a one off sign to Octoplus then you are done forever. I do already have their app* on the phone, but my reading was that isn't a requirement, just if you want to get push notifications on the phone (and I only got notified via email this time so go figure). As said, none is for meaningful financial gain. However, if we (the royal 'we') can contribute even the smallest amount to helping to keep the FF generation suppressed at critical times, then that is OK by me. *force of habit with other suppliers from pre-smart metering days for ease of reading submissions).

I was at home and participated by discharging part of my battery storage to the grid. unfortunately my new battery old communication cable are not a good fit, so I could only export 1.9kW in the hour.
I have channels on my whatsapp and happy to flag up sessions when I see them

Apols, I was talking relative to the 'extra steps' that @berneythedolt was subjected to after trying to do just that.

We moved to the cephalopods recently (if anybody wants a referral code...).
I'm in a waiting list for an appointment to see if we can maybe have a smart meter. No mobile signal, so I suspect unlikely to be possible.
We've also got a currently-empty rental property in the city - that's also with them, and we're waiting for a smart meter appointment there, too... Gawd knows what the score will be there - the meters for all flats are in a utility cupboard that's locked with only the management company having access... You'd think that'd be prime remote-display territory, wouldn't you?

I have a friend who now owns additional properties, courtesy of marrying a wealthy woman. He was a real leftie, anti-capitalist type, constantly bemoaning the plight of the less well-off.... yet somehow isn't shy of lining his pockets at their expense now. Kudos to anyone like yourself obviously preparing their second property for an asylum seeker and family to stay rent-free though...

You'd think that'd be prime remote-display territory, wouldn't you? ok for meters in blocks of flats you need 2 or 3 with better aerials on the comms hubs and the others setup as mesh. Basically the ones with aerials then work a bit like routers with the others "talking" through them. FWIW I have nearly 4 years of being told my gas meter was too far from the electric meter, after I badgered about a dual band Comms hub and meter, they agreed to fit one. Engineer turns up looks at gas meter and says "what cowboy fitted this" He commissioned a new meter and fitted it, after doing the required inspections. took about an hour and a half. he replaced the IHD with a Geo Trio, which is cool it has an app so you can look at consumption etc remotely. One very minor glitch since otherwise A OK, now on tracker for gas which has a lower SC and at the moment is running under 5.5p kWh

Was quoted on QI what can you buy in a newsagent that turns you from a Labour voter to Conservative, the answer a lottery ticket, most winning £1 million or more change to voting Conservative.
