Maybe (I've not been following the latest on the uk riots) but it could have the opposite effect. It also doesn't seem like justice has been done to her and most people receiving lesser sentences for violent crimes. I imagine you are as outraged as I am that rioters convicted of violence got 2-3 years while the peaceful climate protestors got 5 years. You have a good knack of making points that will certainly be popular among our fellow forumites. Nothing wrong with that. 5 years does seem harsh even for closing the motorway preventing ambulances etc. I stand by the fact a nasty woman making nasty statements in the heat of rage should not get a year inside

PS: they weren't nasty statements. They were incitement to others to commit murder.

Spurs footballer films himself apparently breaking the law, and then posts it on social media. What a tw*t (hopefully the old bill will be around to have a word with him shortly).

You are of course welcome to your incorrect interpretation. Terrible injustice.

The woman in question posted on facebook that others should 'Blow the mosque up with the adults in it'. If that isn't incitement to commit murder I don't know what is.

You or I can say all sorts of shite when we're drunk or sober. When the tongue moves in the wrong direction it constitutes a year inside? Are you telling me you've never got hot under the collar with someone for something and said something you regret? Or are you perfect?

This may be the difference between saying shite when drunk in the pub versus publishing it (ie posting on social media). Do. Not. Post. When. Drunk. See also, email, drive, profess undying love, undertake a risky activity, riot.

This woman might be very unpleasant, she might have really nasty views or maybe not. But a sentence to prison of over a year is disgusting and immoral. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz6x105wgz5oSarah Badrawy, prosecuting, accepted Sweeney’s post was made out of anger, not because of racism, and was reckless rather than genuinely intended to put people in fear.I'd make the observation that saying that people should be held in a mosque/synagogue/church/community centre/bingo hall and then blow it up is the thing that is disgusting and immoral. But that is not itself a crime. Publishing that statement in the public domain, during the middle of significant country wide public disorder - threatening the very people she is referring to - turns it into something more sinister and with greater potential for harm. I note later comments about 'drunk' etc., but I've not seen any report that or similar was used by the defence in mitigation. And if ever a deterrence element in sentencing is particularly needed, its in the midst of widespread violent public disorder. The sentence may well be excessive, maybe not, but it isn't "immoral and disgusting". FWIW, given her apparent background, (and perhaps the relatively small size of the group she posted into), I personally think the sentence probably is at the excessive end. Although her comments to police when she was arrested don't really help terribly much and rather negate the "heat of the moment" interpretation.

If you're asking if I have ever threatened to kill or seriously injury somebody (or incited others to do so) when drunk or in a fit of rage then I can honestly say no (as would about 99% of the country). Why anyone would think this is acceptable is a mystery to me.
Down our way if somebody gets seriously bad tempered the worst that happens is they throw their snooker cue in the River Exe on the way home (and I've seen that happen plenty of times over the years)

The police tried to prosecute several times but couldn't find sufficient evidence, he claims it's homophobia from the church because he is gay, he says they are conflating homosexuality with paedophilia. Innocent until proven guilty?Absolutely but in a crime like this the publicity is likely far more of a punishment than a sentence. Hence my comment about the media somewhat deciding his fate. BBC in depth www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cr5n2542q82oworth reading "He documented that while he thought that it could be proved the case involved non-consensual sex, he could not be sure if the alleged victim was 17 or 18 at the time, so the case could not go forward to a tribunalNon-consensual - IE at best sexual assault, at worst ...

Speaking of right wing thugs, I see that friends of one of the Bristol thugs who was recently imprisioned have started a crowd funding campaign to help his wife pay the mortgage. The brother of Andrew Tate is one of the main contributors.
