I may well be missing something in the 'workings', but whilst I am having no issues knowing when the sessions are. Is it not inevitably less beneficial to do every session given my understanding is it is measured as a reduction over your previous 15 days usage if on at least a couple of those days you have deliberately used a minimal amount. I have to confess not to have investigated the mechanics much. I'd looked this up last week but am struggling to find the source in Octopus' terms again. If i recall your baseline usage for a given 30 minute slot is averaged as your usage during that time over the last 2 weekends or last 10 weekdays (i.e. 2 weeks but with weekend and weekday usage kept separate) Their actual T+C are pretty lenient and what i suggest may or may not actually apply: octopus.energy/Octoplus-terms-and-conditions/#:~:text=We%20will%20calculate%20your%20Baseline> We will calculate your Baseline using the BSC P376 ‘Utilising a Baseline Methodology to set Physical Notifications’ without an in-day adjustment. The Baseline is the average consumption for the same period(s) of up to 60 days of your recent smart meter history, excluding days where a Saving Session has taken place.

Damn, only just seen this. No notification again. Was out so would have saved millions. I have just noticed that although I'm on their "updates channel" (a WhatsApp thingy) I had notifications for it defaulted to 'off'. At least I think I did, the wording/display is a bit ambiguous - not the same as for a normal WA group. Anyway, whatever value it was it is now toggled to the opposite value. If I get a notification - not just an update - from it in future I guess I'll know. I don't have any apps. I rely on emails. They worked fine last year except for one that turned up 3 mins after the session had started but I did get an email for every session. Just checked my emails and I received notification of today's 5-6pm session last night at 1954 but yesterday's and Weds notifications have still not arrived.

Well at least it sounds like opting in has no downside. Not sure what the weekend/weekday thing means from a 'tactical usage' point of view. Then again the 'staff' already think i have lost the plot when I am tracking the peaks and troughs of the bread making machine......

I'm not stressing too much over it, but broadly speaking: - I'm ignoring weekends. They're so infrequently used for sessions I dont see any worth in trying to game the system. - If i have enough notice of a weekday session, I'll deliberately load up the weekday prior with whatever useful load i can think of. Baking and nice long showers. So long as the payout remains >10x my unit rate then juicing the usage for 1 out of 10 days' average is a no-brainer. - I'll try to focus my regular demand around 4-6:30. The sessions (especially the DFS Tests) do generally seem to be situated around then. Worst case - My assumptions are wrong and I'm merely discounting my usage rather than outright profiting. Fine by me! Maybe people feel I'm utilising the scheme beyond good faith, but the same could be said for those charging/dumping their domestic battery.

until the last couple of weeks on certain tariffs if you plugged an EV in between 4 and 7 it was starting to charge instantly, and at low rates so EV owners were playing the system by setting a high baseline, then on session days not plugging it in till after. It has to be said that this years system without the IDA ( In day adjustment ) is much better, last year it used 3 hours starting 4 hours before the session as part of the baseline, so if you used 12kW over those 3 hours your baseline had 4kW added. Again people with EVs were in many cases able to draw 45 kW or more giving them an extra 15kW on the baseline, add in big house batteries and some made £500 plus last year. I do hope we see some sign of the promised rewards soon, ie the swap points for merchandise, food, event tickets etc. At the moment I predict I will make around £90, which really given I have invested £8.5k in solar and batteries is 1% certainly it is financially worthwhile on 24 hour notice events to use more in the session slots, provided the payback is 10 times the cost per unit. however as I'm on Flux and the peak rate is 38.5P so allowing for charging loses I would need over £4 to make it worthwhile. Personally I have no issue with people using electricity they would use ie showering during the next days session time. However when I've seen people saying they have left a 12kW shower running for an hour, or have a fan heater on the patio using 3kW then yes I get angry at the waste. jontyab we had the nonsense yesterday of the east of England getting a power up, which IIRC was 3-5 then a 5-6 saver session so people could fill a house battery for free then dump at £2.25. one issue as I see it is it rewards change not general good behaviour, so it encourages people to use more during the peak ( 4-7 ) so that it is easier to use less during a session

I have a 4kw array (no batteries) and up until recently the notion of turning on the dishwasher et al at around 5 pm would never have occurred to me whatsoever. However on a dull day with no prospect of export (a lot lately) and if the dishes or clothes REALLY need washing then on it goes at peak time to up my average. With EDF paying up to £4.75 on occasions it's well worth it. The question is am I acting unethically?

The question is am I acting unethically? the irony is probably not, the peak 4-7pm always used to be the time of day with the highest carbon intensity now it isn't, the other irony is that at this time the grid charge energy companies more to transmit the power ( IIRC about 12p extra ) I think like others, myself included, you see how the game works and you play by the rules, playing to the rules is not unethical. complaining that others are making an effort and are saving money as a result .. but the people that complain are the same ones who would scream if we had to load shed tonight ( or any other night ) and they couldn't get online to play games, microwave a burger etc. we have to make an effort to help balance the grid.

All up to date now.
since 1/11/23 Cost of electricity ( including standing charge ) £63.50 Value of Octopoints £64.50
3 lots of bonus points appeared today 400 ( for being in top 20% on one session ) and 2 lots of 200 for signing up, now I know that 800 points is only £1 but every little helps as they say.
for those with points the merchandise shop is open socks are quite expensive but a tee shirt for £4 of points seems decent value

This is the first one where I have received an app notification. Previously I'd been relying on Twitter letting me know.
