The jury at the trial of Martyn Blake (Chris Kaba shooting trial) took about 3 hours to return a unanimous verdict of Not Guilty. It is right that the Police should be subject to potential charge and trial. However, the evidence presented in terms of the witness statements (primarily other officers, of course), of the comms (including the fact that we now know that Kaba knew it was police that were following and stopping him), and the video footage, raises serious questions about the CPS decision to charge. Was there really a "realistic prospect of conviction"? The fact that the jury took only around 3 hours to come to its conclusion is itself perhaps a judgement on that.
After the trial, Kaba's mother/family spoke of having been left with the "deep pain of injustice", and "Chris was stolen from us, and this decision shows his life - and many others like him - does not matter to the system. Our son deserved better,". Also demonstrators were outside the court.
Now, in breaking news, the trial judge has lifted a restriction: we now know that Kaba had been implicated in a shooting at the Oval Space nightclub in Hackney, east London only days before the incident.
It is probably, but not definitively, right that was withheld from the jury. They should try the case on the facts of the incident and as I recall the police were not stopping the vehicle because they suspected he was in it: I believe they did not know who the occupant was at the time. However, I'd think that it would have provided a pretty damn good reason why Kaba would have acted aggressively and tried to escape from the stop.
Still, while I understand the grief of Kaba's mother and family, it does shed a fresh light on her claims of "injustice". Oh, and apparently she tried to continue the restraint so as "not to prejudice the inquest jury".
Sorry, but sympathy for them has significantly diminished. At least have the honesty to admit to the circumstances, not to do your best to ruin the life of an officer who was doing his duty while pretending your son was some form of innocent victim.

...raises serious questions about the CPS decision to charge. Was there really a "realistic prospect of conviction"? And if they hadn't? There'd have been perpetual conspiracies about how he was "murdered", how it's all a "cover-up", etc etc. Sometimes, the trial is needed just to put things to bed, even if it IS harsh on the accused. Not as harsh in the long term as the insinuations.

Pretty much agree. the footage from the body worn cameras is pretty conclusive ( IMHO) At least some of the cars involved in stopping him are marked police cars he is told "Armed Police put your hands up" his response is to raise one hand and then use the other to turn the steering wheel and attempt to ram his way past the police vehicles. he is clearly not complying with lawful orders, and I have to say in the same situation fearing for the lives of my colleagues I would have opened fire. I think the jury got it right More info Police believe he was involved in a shooting 2 days before the event, the car was used as a get away vehicle for another incident the day before the shooting. He was a rapper who performed under the names Madix or Mad Itch and was part of the 67 gang, a UK drill group and infamous gang.
I would suggest his family protestations of he's innocent, no justice etc are a steaming heap of bovine excrement

Not as harsh in the long term as the insinuations. you can't and shouldn't put every firearms officer on trial every time they are involved in a shooting, fatal or non-fatal, just because they are doing their job. That is, frankly, ridiculous. Extrapolate it: every time a suspect is injured during an arrest, should the arresting officers be put on trial for assault? Every time someone dies at work, should the company be put on trial for corporate manslaughter? Just because? You investigate. And then if there is sufficient evidence of a crime having been committed you charge and take to court. You don't take it to court regardless of the evidence. Just because. Which is in effect what you are advocating should be done. If the public don't have faith in the investigation process then that is what you need to tackle. Not put people in the dock purely to compensate for that.

So, not the angel his family wanted us to think he was. What a surprise. I wonder if anyone who championed his cause now regrets doing so, now his violent and criminal past has been disclosed.

Was naming / identifying the police officer the right thing to do?

This is not related to Kaba of course. metro.co.uk/2023/08/08/london-pc-drove-at-81mph-seconds-before-killing-woman-crossing-road-19297615/This Pc has been named for killing a pedestrian in London. He was driving 81mph before hitting the woman. Is driving 81mph the right thing to do at the moment? I don’t think so. The PC pleaded guilty for causing death by dangerously driving. Sentenced to 3 years. Oh I forgot, The named PC for killing pedestrian is non caucasian. Naming is ok, but NX121? 🤔 Probably Caucasian, not ok to be named in the views of some readers here.

I am a bit selective. 😅 It wouldn’t bring me joy to bring back his life. The police officer was on duty chasing, that’s what I read.

That's fine with me. no need to apologise, I just thought you might be interested. I should have probably started a new thread anyway. I'll report it and see if admin can move it.
