You can afford what you choose to afford. I remember being shocked to discover the monthly HP payments on my first brand new car in 1985 cost exactly the same as a relative was wasting on his cigarette addiction. I will wager there's no shortage of locals wielding an iPhone in one hand and a fag in the other, telling everyone how deprived they are. Berny, being totally honest, and blunt yes these are the same people that I have seen using a local food bank ( I was dropping a donation off ) The difficulty is that from a quick glance you don't know the full picture. That person with a fancy iPhone might have had a well paid job 18 months ago and taken out a 24 month £50/month contract for that phone. With covid (or from some other means) they might have since lost that job but still be tied into the remainder of that contract even though it's not really affordable. Unfortunately we seem to have moved to a culture where we live month by month assuming that things will continue in the same way without thinking about the consequences if something happened that changed that. When such change happens (e.g. covid) people then struggle as they're tied into what's no longer affordable. (I've got the impression, although not tested, that this can also go the other way that affordability checks often only look at income and ignore that you might have enough in savings to cover an ongoing expense).

who are we?
Those who have bought houses that have soared in value due to no action of ours or Those who cannot afford to buy houses because they were trained to be part of a high-tech industry that Tony Blair forgot to deliver?

Honestly this is not made up I actually heard this last Friday.
A young couple, coming out of Wetherspoons.
Him "we've only got £4 and 10 p to last until Thursday"
Her "But you enjoyed yourself didn't you having a laugh and a couple of pints"
Him "yes but we only have £4 and 10 p to last until Thursday"
Her " Let's order a takeaway for tea, I fancy a curry"

He told everyone to do degrees, not degrees in business/science etc, so we ended up with a stream of "insert here" degrees and no one who could plumb in a washing machine

private sector; well I think you forget the dead-hand of Gordon on the tiller (Global leader in Green energy... which is how the Danes got so good at it) etc etc. No he was so up his bottom with Cool-Brittania, ethical foreign policy and the dodgy dossier leading to war that he forgot he had a country to run.
When I hear people chant "never trust a Tory" I just remember that duo.

The people chanting that probably see Blair and Brown as Tories. There have been many very trust-worthy politicians on both sides of the divide over the years. The current bunch of Tories? I wouldn't trust them as far as I could kick them, but I'm more than happy to find out how far that is.

As a weirdo ( Card carrying union member that often voted Conservative ) I agree with you.
however at the moment as I see it Labour is left of where it has been for the past 30 odd years the tories seem to be occupying most of the ground from the soft left to the hard right.
One of what I see as labours issues is the power of the unions, not so many these days that would be "anti green" ie the old heavy industries etc. but of course the newer industries tend to be less unionised.
And of course what are politicians remembered for ( and these are my recollections )
Jim Callaghan, the winter of discontent Maggie Thatcher, standing against the NUM and the European parliament Paul Foot, donkey jacket at the cenotaph Neil Kinnock, falling over on the beach at the party conference John Major, Edwina curry Iain Duncan Smith, Nope nothing Tony Blair , Cool brittania and making a fortune Gordon Brown, constant Prudence comments in the budget, putting money away for a rainy day, but when that rainy day arrived there was no money David Cameron, this is a great deal from the EU, clearly it wasn't, and he misinterpreted the countries mood, personally I believe if the EU had known the feelings of the British people the deal might have been different Nick Clegg, Student Fees/Loans Theresa May, Seriously I don't think she could negotiate delivery of a Pizza Boris Johnson, Terrible brexit deal, and looking after his acquaintances

It seems at one point some areas including mine were given Green bins, a friend took 2 buckets full of smashed sheet glass yesterday and that could go in the glass receptacles. Toughened glass apparently is an issue

Oh @bobo , SPOT ON!I want to scream every time I hear someone has a Degree in "Meeja Studies", or somesuch, and their spelling, grammar, geographical knowledge of the UK, *, etc, etc is beyond atrocious. I know, because I used to have to interview and try and employ them. In their minds they're all brilliant and want to start as a "Manager". And don't get me started on the FdSc Surf Science and Technology available from Cornwall College! EDIT / PS - * and Basic Arithmetic.

Most degrees now just seem to be a box ticking exercise to qualify for a job interview, especially in the public sector. What they don't do is train the mind for independent thought and initiative or even provide useful training for anything. No wonder so many graduates end up in dead end jobs and will never repay their loans.

"I don't want to be paid too much as I might have to pay back my Student's loan".
Frankly the best people I found, had failed their degree, or had no degree, or in one case could only manage the present tense in speaking (yes English her first language, but Wakefield). These people knew what poverty was and didn't like it and would do anything rather than experience it again. I say all this as a lazy entitled white English male so I suspect I may not be woke.

@bobo not as bad as the woman we had who slapped in a formal complaint after an interview because we didn't ask the questions in Spanish
